DURHAM QUARTERLY MEETING REGISTERS <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This is a list of surviving pre-1837 register material for Durham Quarterly Meeting of the Society of Friends and its constituent meetings, comprising registers surrendered to the Registrar General in 1841 and 1857, and a few un-surrendered items now held in Durham County Record Office and Tyne and Wear Archives. \u00a9 C J Pitt-Lewis 2010 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DRO \u2013 Durham County Record Office TRO \u2013 Tyne and Wear Archives, Newcastle. Note that the majority of the records held here have been microfilmed, but not fully catalogued, so microfilm references are given in addition to the piece number where applicable. Dates are covering dates for the register entries. I have tried to indicate large chronological gaps; gaps of only a few years are not shown. For surrendered registers, two references are given. The first is the National Archives reference \u2013 class RG6 and the piece number. The second is the book number used when the registers were surrendered in 1841 or 1857 \u2013 this is the number used in the digests. This list therefore acts as a cross reference from the book number in the digest to the National Archives piece number. The final column contains a brief indication of the nature of the register. More detailed information is sometimes given in footnotes. For marriage registers, I have tried to indicate either in this column or in footnotes whether the entries consist of full copies of the marriage certificate, abstracts of it, or merely brief register entries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It contains: pp.1-49, headed \u201cA True Redgester of the Births, Marriages and Buriells in Norton Meeting since the yeare 1671:\u201d containing B 1671-1687 at Norton, Stockton, Greatham, Shotton, Carlton Billingham, Yarm and \u201cCoopon\u201d, M register entries 1672-1684 at Norton and Stockton, and D 1671-1684 mostly at Norton and Carlton. pp.53-95, headed \u201cThe Redchester Booke being the second the first being full\u201d., containing BMD in family groups, with an index of families, apparently begun about 1725, covering dates B 1683-1804 (including birthdates of parents) M 1712-1799 D 1720-1816. pp.117-120 Register of B 1770-1777, M 1772, 1776 D (burials at Norton) 1769-1778. Loose between pp. 120 and 121 is a paper headed \u201cA Register of the Marriages Births and Burials belonging Stockton Meeting\u201d, and containing BD 1671-1672 and stating \u201cmarriages none\u201d. On p 69 is the death of James Reeve 28 12mo 1795 (b.1768) \u201cat Barcelona in Spain, where he had gone for the benefit of a milder air & climate & in hope of some salutary effects from a sea Voyage). On p.70 is a description of the Farne Islands, quoted from \u201cCuriosities Natural & Artificial of the Island of Great Britain, Volume 5th\u201d. On p.71 is a testimony to Robert Henderson, drowned at sea off Alnmouth 2 1mo 1791 \u201cwell known all along the coast (of Yorkshire & Northumberland) from Whitby to the Fern Islands, by the name of the Sailing Quaker\u201d. 8 1857 surrender. Pages 182-263 of Stockton MM Mens Minute Book, containing minutes for 8mo 1754 to 7 mo 1761, including marriage proceedings and minutes of accomplishment. The rest of the book is DRO SF\/Du\/MM\/1\/3. 9 1857 surrender, explained by the following note on the title page: \u201cThis Register Book belonging to Darlington Monthly of Friends was discovered in 1840 after the other Books belonging that Meeting had been sent up to London to be surrendered to the Commissioners of the Crown appointed to inspect Non-parochial Registers. \u2013 It is now transmitted to the Custody of Wm Manley Houndsditch London, the Registering Clerk of the Society of Friends this Thirteenth day of Ninth mo 1841. John Beaumont Pease Registering Officer of Darlington Monthly Meeting. Witness Wm Backhouse Jr Clerk to Darlington Monthly Meeting.\u201d A letter concerning it dated 18 6mo 1841 from John Backhouse to William Manley is inserted. The greater part of the register consists of family groups, the coverage being B 1619-1824 M 1650-1823 D 1659-1836. The families seem to be almost exclusively from Darlington or Cockerton, and the burials are almost all at Darlington. On p1 is a list in a 17th century hand of 16 names headed \u201cThe Families of all Friends Containd herein\u201d, to which a later hand has added: \u201cThe above families belonged to Shotton Meeting supposed about the year 1660\u201d. 11 A few BMD register entries, some in family groups, contained in the Yarm PM Minute Book 1688-1762. 12 Title: \u201cStokton Monthly Meeting Register of Births Marriages and Deaths Begining in the Year 1760 to 31st 12th month 1775.\u201d Birth and burial registers on facing pages, and, at other end of the book, 22 copy marriage certificates. Most of the pages are badly damaged. The birth register appears to be headed \u201c1650\u201d \u201cThe names of Children that was born[ ] the yeare 1650\u201d. The second 1650 appears to have been written over \u201c1655\u201d or possibly \u201c1657\u201d. The first entry is the birth of William Heighington on 15 1mo in a year that is missing; the second is the birth of Margaret d John Heighington on 3 5mo 1658. The rest of the book, containing MM minutes and sufferings, is in Tyne and Wear Archives (Acc.3744; MF 215) 18 What appears to be a Durham PM register was used after 1760 as an MM register.
